Canine Team History
In 1993 the Nevada City Police Department deployed a full time canine team. The team was well
received by the community and valuable asset for the Department. The team retired in 1999 and
has not been replaced. In 2014 the Department decided to propose that the NCPD Canine Team
be renewed. The Nevada City Police Department is the only law enforcement agency in
Nevada County with a “duel trained” Patrol Canine Team. A duel trained canine is trained in
suspect detection/ apprehension and narcotics detection. The ultimate vision is to have two
Police Canine Teams; one with the Nevada City Police Department, the other with the Grass
Valley Police Department which would enhance local K-9 coverage in western Nevada County,
thereby reducing crime, increasing the effectiveness of criminal apprehension, and building
meaningful partnerships in the community without distinction of jurisdictional boundaries. This
unique program involved the entire community and increased the partnership between law
enforcement, businesses and the citizens we serve.
Rüdiger Foundation
The Rüdiger Foundation (formerly Western Nevada County K9 Association) was created by interested community members to provide the initial $71,000 required to implement NCPD’s K9 Program and to provide the estimated $28,000 per year to maintain our K9 Team. The mission of the Rüdiger Foundation is to identify and attract funding to support, promote and assist in the systematic development of local police canine programs. The initial goal of the Rüdiger Foundation was to secure startup funding, equipment, a K9, and handler selection for NCPD canine program. This was completed July 2015. Now that the NCPD K9 team is operational the ongoing goal is to provide financial support for the Canine Team in the Nevada City Police Department. An additional goal is to secure funding for a second canine team for the Grass Valley Police Department. For further information on how you can assist with our K9 team you are invited to visit Rüdiger Fan Club on Facebook.
